IELTS勉強法 リーディング 『合致問題は推測が大切！』
合致問題、これもなかなか難しいですね～。
私もこの問題パターンで散々苦労しました…
ではまず、合致問題とはどんなパターンなのか、下の例題をご覧下さい。
From the information in the passage, indicate the characteristic of the each following term.
Write the appropriate letters A-D in the boxes 1-4 on your answer sheet.

Characteristic
A. A Eurasian country that stretches across the western Asia and southeastern Europe.
B. An island country in East Asia. The characters that make up this country's name mean "sun-origin country", which is whythis country is sometimes identified as the "Land of the Rising Sun".
C. A country sharing land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west and elsewhere is bordered by the North Sea, Irish Sea, Celtic Sea, Bristol Channel and English Channel. The capital is London,
D. A country in Central Europe, bordered to the north by the North Sea,Denmark, and the Baltic Sea; to the east by Poland and the Czech Republic.The capital and largest city is Berlin.
いやはや… 見れば見るほどやっかいな問題です。
なにせ、使われている単語も難しいですし、何となくウンザリしてしまいますよね。
しかし、もう一度IELTSの基本理念を思い出して下さい。
「単語力ではなく読解力が大切」
というのが、IELTS対策の「極意」です。
したがって、それほど高い単語力がなくても、それを推測できる記述が必ずあるはずです。
そこで、それぞれの選択肢の文章をよく見てみると…
「A」の場合、
「西アジアと東南ヨーロッパにある」
と書かれています。アジアとヨーロッパの間の国というと…
そうです。「トルコ」のことですよね。
したがって、３番の答えは「A」となるのです。
また、「C」と「D」の記述を見てみると、
あらら、ご丁寧にも「首都」が書かれていますね～。
この部分を見つけてしまえば、ほかの部分は無視できますね。
ロンドンが首都なのは「イギリス」ですし、ベルリンが首都なのは「ドイツ」です。
したがって、１番の答えが「D」であり、２番の答えが「C」ということになります。
このように、必ずしも一語一語を丁寧に訳すのではなく、答えに必要なポイントを探し出すことが大切なんですよ。
今回紹介した例題は、「推測が大切」ということを知ってもらうために、多少、分かりやすいものを作成してみましたが、これより難しい単語が出てくる問題でも、ここで紹介した方法で解答するとけっこう簡単に解けるんですよ。
